SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, MI - An armed 32-year-old man holding two women hostage was arrested Sunday afternoon in the Village of Lennon after a more than three-hour-long standoff with police. Despite the gunfire, Keely and Fossati rushed into the room and rescued the woman. Some 200 law enforcement personnel took part in the operation, police said. MSP said Meridy fired on the team, hitting Keely in his bulletproof vest. and rescued the three remaining hostages and the suspected hostage-taker was left dead. Investigators said they negotiated with Meridy by cellphone for more than 30 minutes before the MSP SWAT team heard a single gunshot in the hotel room and forced their way inside. MSP tracked the suspect, 44-year-old Marcus Meridy, to the American Inn on E. 18, Keely and Fossati were trying to track down the man who had kidnapped his estranged wife at gunpoint from the assisted living facility where she worked. Brian Keely of the Rockford post and Trooper Carlos Fossati of the Wayland post were recently awarded the MSP Bravery Award for going above and beyond the normal expectations for law enforcement. The negotiations continued until about 7:30 a.m., when police heard sounds of distress from Gardner’s wife and threats from Gardner. Police said officers learned Gardner was holding his family hostage inside a bedroom.
(WOOD) - Two members of the Michigan State Police are being honored for rescuing a hostage during a shooting at a Benton Township hotel. The SWAT officers formed a hostage rescue team that could quickly enter the home.
